The typical high school store seems to be an afterthought, hidden away in some small room inaccessible to any but the most persistent customer. The architects of Warren Woods Tower High School, on the other hand, designed Campus Corner, as a "real" retailing installation while it was still "on the drawing board" and before the first shovel was put into the ground. Michigan State University created a "model" that the originators of the systems involved in its operation as well. Campus Corner was first opened in 1966. With over 1,200 square feet of sales floor, plus a large class/workroom, office, separate stock room and tree outside display windows, Campus Corner is truly a retail simulation. The school designers placed the store in a convenient location west of the Common's stairway, close to the Cafeteria. the place is easy to get to and there is plenty of room inside. Most school stores might sell a few candy bars and a t-shirt or two. Campus Corner is a multi-line department store selling a large assortment of items ranging from office and school supplies, WWT insignia clothing designed by the students themselves, balloons, and gift items. Our gift items include candles, bath and body products, picture frames, seasonal merchandise, and our new line of "gourmet gift items". Many high school stores are manned by a few student volunteers needing something to do during a free hour during the day. Campus Corner is operated by a large staff of juniors and seniors enrolled in this two-hour marketing curriculum including Marketing I and the one-hour Store Management "lab" contact. Interested in learning about business and entrepreneurship in general and retailing in particular, Campus Corner student employees, whom we call "Campus Corner Associates," are directly involved in and responsible for all activities involved in operating a retail business. These activities include purchasing, selling, inventory control, accounting, visual merchandising, advertising and publicity, as well as the day-to-day management decisions required to keep the store operation going. Each merchandise line, the Candy Counter for example, is under the management of one or more students. What items are carried, how they are priced, merchandised, advertised, displayed and accounted for are decisions made largely by those students. In other words, what you see on the shelves of Campus Corner is there because some student at sometime decided it should be there. whatever your reason for visiting Campus Corner, we hope you have worthwhile and enjoyable experience. |
